Danielle Smith

Bio

Danielle was born in Monterey, California and characterizes herself as a painter and a writer. She primarily works in oil paint on stretched canvas. Previously her work manifested through quirky interests, creating the theme of vibrant youth and cultural customs.

Currently, she creates paintings and writings to showcase the passion of her religion depicted in emotional struggle and release. Her aspiration is to portray the overwhelming rush of spirituality, as if penetrating each pore, washing past bones, and creating life anew with a transcendent osmosis. Danielle uses hair and water to represent baptism and surrender, coupled with soft flesh and vulnerable compositions. Figures carefully crafted in oil paint exude comforting light as a guide through darkness showcasing intimate relationships.

Danielle just received her BFA from California College of the Arts in San Francisco in painting and a minor in Writing and Literature.

Statement

I am drawn to create paintings and writings that showcase the passion of my religious relationship depicted in emotional struggle and release. Spirituality is a powerful force felt differently by each individual in many forms. I aspire to characterize the overwhelming rush of spirituality as if penetrating each pore washing past bones and creating anew with a transcendent osmosis. Garments flow like hair rippling through the plane like diverging spirits bound by ribbon. Hair flows like water to characterize the outpour of a sweet surrender letting each strand gently caress the smallest of crevices on canvas. Through the usage of hair and water as a symbol for baptism and surrender coupled with soft warm flesh and devotional compositions I create the feeling of commitment as well as the feeling of utterly needing and reliance. Contained by a never-ending sea of darkness, hands hold meaning captive beneath the surface. Undulation creates nooks to hide but nowhere to escape emphasizing turmoil faced. The backgrounds of the paintings fade into vast darkness to contrast the illuminating skin. Figures carefully crafted in oil paint exude comforting light to be a guide through the darkness showcasing intimate relationships. Words patch up holes and flow like vicious paint mimicking honey, creating deep ridges of texture across a smooth veneer.
